The U.S. added 29,000 jobs in September 2026 and unemployment was 4.2% (BLS, 2 October 2026). For a recently funded startup hiring its first controller, compliance lead or product manager, a soft market is a window. It is also a noisier one.

Crunchbase counted $159 billion in global venture funding in Q3 2026, spread across close to 6,000 startups (Crunchbase News, 5 October 2026). If your company is one of them, the hires that shape the next 12 months are often not engineers. They are the first product manager, the first marketing lead and the first finance hire.

GENIUS Act compliance hiring: the BSA officer and controller a stablecoin startup needs before January 2027

If you're building a stablecoin startup, hire two people before you file for a GENIUS Act license: a BSA/AML officer and a controller who can support a monthly CFO certification. The Federal Reserve's proposal of 29 September 2026 lists the BSA officer and the CFO among the officers regulators will look at, and the Act takes effect no later than 18 January 2027.
